What is the Young Driver Pass Plus Scheme?

The Pass Plus Scheme is designed to help new drivers become safer and better on the road. Created by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), insurance agencies and the automotive industry, it is aimed at new and young drivers who are statistically more at risk for accidents within the first two years of gaining a license. This system will build skills and knowledge by teaching you how to become a more confident driver by anticipating and handling hazards through real world practice and classroom theory.


Although it is designed to be taken by new drivers within a year of passing their test, the Pass Plus program can be entered by anyone at any time and is highly recommended for all drivers. The program consists of six sections of practical training focusing on different driving conditions.


  • in town
  • rural roads
  • on motorways
  • on dual carriages
  • at night
  • in inclement weather

Fees for the Pass Plus courses vary for different localities and instructors. Some local authorities in Scotland and England, and all those in Wales can give assistance paying for these courses. Be sure to contact these resources before committing your own funds.


Your chosen instructor must be registered with the DSA and posses a ‘green badge’ to be ranked as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). if you are unsure of your instructor’s credentials, you can can check if they possess is a registered Pass Plus instructor by calling the DSA Pass Plus Section at 0115 936 6504 and giving them your instructors name and ADI number.


An official copy of the Pass Plus Pupil’s Guide will be given to you upon beginning the course which contains detailed information on all parts of the program. Be sure to thoroughly study and learn the information contained within before beginning your training. The program consists of practical lessons with hands on practice. Classroom based theory sessions may also be included, especially if no suitable motorways are located nearby. At least five and a half out of the minimum six hours will be spent inside a car. Your progress will be recorded by your instructor as you perform each module. There is no final test, but you will need to perform satisfactorily on each section in order to continue.


Upon successfully completing the tasks and training, you will receive your Pass Plus certificate which can be submitted to your insurance company to gain a discount on your car policy. At this point, you can further continue to the Advanced Driving Test program which will offer even more financial benefits through your insurer.
